Day 1

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

You are collected from Kilimanjaro International Airport or your Arusha hotel after breakfast and drive south-west to Tarangire, about two hours on tarmac. Tarangire is elephant country: the river holds water when the surrounding land does not, so the dry season concentrates big herds along it, and the park's baobabs give it a landscape found nowhere else on the northern circuit. You game drive the afternoon along the river circuit and leave for your camp towards sunset.

Day 2

Tarangire → Ngorongoro Highlands

A morning game drive in Tarangire while the light is still low, then out of the park and up into the Ngorongoro highlands, climbing through farmland and forest to Karatu on the crater's outer slopes. The drive is roughly three hours with stops. The afternoon is yours — the altitude here is around 1,500 m and the evenings are cool, so a fleece is worth having.

Day 3

Ngorongoro Crater Full Day

The day the trip is built around. You descend into the crater shortly after dawn, when the floor is still cold and the predators are still moving. Ngorongoro is a largely self-contained ecosystem of some 260 square kilometres carrying one of the highest predator densities in Africa, and it is the most reliable place in Tanzania to see black rhino. You game drive the floor through the morning, take picnic lunch beside the hippo pool, and climb back out in the early afternoon.

Day 4

Lake Manyara → Arusha / Departure

After breakfast you drop down the rift escarpment to Lake Manyara — groundwater forest at the gate, then open floodplain and the soda lake beyond, with flamingo on it when the water is right. It is a compact park and a good last morning: elephant in the forest, baboon troops on the road, and birdlife that makes the final drive worth taking slowly. You reach Arusha in the afternoon for your onward flight.

Amazing Trip around Kenya and Tanzania

My wife and I did a 7-day safari with Active Wonders last August, visiting both Kenya and Tanzania, and honestly, we couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. Fantastic Safari Experience in Tanzania

An adventure beyond my expectations. Brilliant

This was such an amazing trip that covered the Ngorongoro crater area with all its wildlife roaming freely, the Serengeti and the migration of the wildebeest crossing over into Kenya. Wonderful varied accommodation from well equipped tents with all amenities to hotels and lodges. Zebras, lions with cubs, bathing hippos, leopards during the night safari and numerous birds. Elephants and giraffes were everywhere — all in all a fabulous tour.

Who could ask for more?

Being river crossing time of year our anticipation of this safari to begin our visit to Tanzania was high and was realised. We departed Arusha and headed for Tarangire National Park. As expected the elephants were prolific and backed up with many other wildlife to keep us happy as well. We stayed at Elephant Lodge which is constructed from old shipping containers. It was terrific — nice accommodation, food and lovely staff.

A dream come true for us, amazing safari trip!

We booked direct with Active Wonders (Allano) and from the very beginning, the communication has been great and he has been very transparent as well.
